I know a lot of families with autism have been put through the ringer during COVID; and I know how easy it can be to lose hope. I wanted this month’s series to inspire ideas to try to help our kiddos. Maybe you need a new idea, or a reminder of something you’ve previously tried and meant to revisit or had on your “possible” list. I want to stick to things that are fairly simple, non-invasive, and don’t cost a fortune. For example, HBOT works great for lots of families but 5k+ is a lot for a “maybe.” So, this list will mostly be “Why not? Couldn’t hurt” ideas. Just a reminder – I’m not a doctor, and nothing here should be taken as medical advice. Please see my full disclaimer here, and consult with a medical professional before starting any treatment. And, PLEASE share in the comments any personal wins you’ve had to help inspire others!

I’ve written about homeopathy before. We use it for acute conditions, like bumps and scrapes, insect bites, and other minor ailments. I’ve also written about how we used it following my son Christopher’s dental surgery. But homeopathy can be a great tool for treating autism.  Amy Lansky wrote the book Impossible Cure, detailing her son’s complete recovery from autism using homeopathy. While (like with everything else) not everyone will have such dramatic results, homeopathy is safe and gentle. So it’s definitely worth considering homeopathy for autism.

Before We Get Started …

Of course there is a lot of negative press out there about homeopathy. Though mainstream medicine can’t seem to make up its mind if it thinks of homeopathy as an ineffective scam or a as  dangerous intervention. But, the truth is that homeopathy has been used successfully for hundreds of years, its effectiveness is supported by clinical evidence, and it an excellent safety profile. Considering that well over 100,000 Americans die each year from taking medications correctly as prescribed (some estimates list taking prescribed medication as the 4th leading cause of death!) and nearly one third of FDA approved medications have major safety issues, I’d say that homeopathy hasn’t earned the bad rap it’s gotten compared to allopathic medicine.

Homeopathy In A Nutshell

Homeopathy was founded in 1796 by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann and is based on the principle that “like cures like.” It became popular because it focused on the patient as a whole and not just on pathology. Homeopathic remedies are made by diluting substances to specific potencies. Healing occurs when an individual is given the correct remedy at the correct potency. Homeopathy promotes optimal health not only physically but also mentally and emotionally.

Homeopathy for Autism

When classical homeopaths treat autism a full current and historical case of the patient – physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, etc. – will be taken. Typically, for autism, the homeopath will either use a constitutional remedy or use sequential homeopathy.

A constitutional remedy focuses on the patient’s current state and the symptoms he or she is currently experiencing and looks at totality of symptoms. The homeopath uses a detailed intake which includes mental and emotional state, fears and anxieties, food preferences and aversions, responses to weather and temperature, sleep patterns, physical factors and appearance (and many other things). The homeopath tries to find the substance that mirrors the energetic state of the patient based on this information,

In sequential homeopathy, the homeopathy uses remedies in a specific sequence to treat the specific shocks and traumas the patient has experienced. These are identified by creating a timeline of their occurrences. Then, they are treated in reverse order, starting at the present and then going back through birth and inherited predispositions. In this approach, the case history is used to give specific remedies in a particular order, targeting specific events from the history of the patient. On a personal note, it was after a round of sequential homeopathy that Christopher FINALLY was potty-trained. It literally happened out of nowhere, as if by magic – something just finally clicked.

If you decide to try homeopathy, make sure you find a well-trained, classical homeopath – preferably one who has experience working with autism. Figuring out our kids can be a challenge so it will be as much of an art as a science. You’ll want to find a good fit, and keep an open mind. And remember that the body WANTS to heal. Homeopathy helps it find the energy to do so.

To quote Dr. Bernie Siegel, “There is no such thing as an incurable disease, only incurable people.”
