I know a lot of families with autism have been put through the ringer during COVID; and I know how easy it can be to lose hope. I wanted this month’s series to inspire ideas to try to help our kiddos. Maybe you need a new idea, or a reminder of something you’ve previously tried and meant to revisit or had on your “possible” list. I want to stick to things that are fairly simple, non-invasive, and don’t cost a fortune. For example, HBOT works great for lots of families but 5k+ is a lot for a “maybe.” So, this list will mostly be “Why not? Couldn’t hurt” ideas. Just a reminder – I’m not a doctor, and nothing here should be taken as medical advice. Please see my full disclaimer here, and consult with a medical professional before starting any treatment. And, PLEASE share in the comments any personal wins you’ve had to help inspire others!
The Central Nervous System
Chiropractic care has many cognitive, emotional, and sensory-motor benefits. You might think of a chiropractor as someone who cracks your back into place, but chiropractic care is so much more than that. It treats the whole central nervous system (CNS), which the spine runs through. The CNS sends signals to the brain, so when the CNS is impaired these signals are as well. Correcting the alignment of the spine can help the CNS properly send signals to the brain. This helps improve the functioning of all the organs in the body.
Chiropractic Care For Autism
To be clear, no one is saying that chiropractic care “cures” autism. But, it can help with some of the issues common to individuals with autism, such as digestive and motor issues. Autism is not just about the way the brain processes sensory information, but also how the information is received and acted on. Physical, emotional, and chemical/environmental factors can all put stress on the central nervous system. When the nerves that provide feedback are disrupted, the body’s “fight or flight” response is activated. Then the body is in panic mode and the systems the nerves communicate to can’t properly function.
For example, the parasympathetic nerves in the cervical spine control the digestive system. When their signals are disrupted so is digestion. When the sensory systems in the spine and inner ear aren’t signaling correctly, coordination and balance will be affected. Many parents have reported improvement in these specific areas following chiropractic care.
Chiropractic care realigns the spine which allows relieves the pressure on the nerves transmitting signals from the body to the brain. When the nerves are functioning properly, the body’s whole sensory system works better. Reducing stress on the CNS can have dramatic effects. Research of chiropractic care for autism has shown positive effects and improvement of symptoms, and that chiropractic care is beneficial as part of a multidisciplinary approach to autism management.
Craniosacral Therapy
Another beneficial therapy (different than, but similar to chiropractic care) is Craniosacral Therapy. The craniosacral system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This system is supposed to move freely, but physical and emotional trauma can cause it to tighten. This puts pressure on the body’s systems and nerves, muscles, organs, blood vessels, lymph vessels, and bones can be negatively affected.
Craniosacral Therapy uses gentle manipulations to relieve compression in the head, sacrum, and spinal column. This releases the fascia – the body’s connective tissue – which allows the cerebrospinal fluid to flow freely. This relief from pressure allows the body’s systems to work properly again and can result in positive physical and emotional health changes. Improvements in functional behavior following craniosacral therapy has been reported by autism parents. These include improved socialization, sleep, and behavior. I’ve had craniosacral done on all of my kids (and my husband!).
The Bottom Line
I believe that more research is needed into these healing modalities, especially in regards to autism. However, patient and parent testimony is very positive. Some parents have reported dramatic improvements in development, social skills, digestion, sleep, and behavior. Even the critics can’t seem to find any documented dangers or negative effects. Everyone can benefit from a properly functioning central nervous system, so if you are so inclined go ahead and get crackin’ (Gong!).
